Maryland Woman Keeps Handwritten Journal of Poetry

This archive includes an album of poetry kept by Helen Tootell in the mid-nineteenth century. Tootell lived in Annapolis and Baltimore, Maryland, and copied poems written by others, some written to her, and may have written some of the unsigned poems herself.

Contents and Excerpts

' Helen Tootell, Bound volume of handwritten poetry and hand-drawn illustrations, ca. 1829-1830. "Helen Tootell" stamped in gold on front cover. 178 pp., 6.5" x 8.25". The contents are primarily copied poems, either from print or from original sources. The first, by "Odell," is entitled "For H. T. By A Friend" and is dated September 4, 1829. A later one, "To Helen," is also by Odell. Several were written by Charley More. Others have authors listed, while some do not. Several are decorated with drawings of flowers.

"I have been ill with dysentery & can only write you a few lines. You must excuse my brevity therefore. I enclose you fifty Dollars, which as soon as you receive please write me word."

Helen Tootell (1771-1859) was born in Maryland. In 1810, she lived in Annapolis, where she was the head of a household of four white females in the age range of 16 to 25. She died in January 1859 at the "Aged Women's Home" in Baltimore and was buried in Loudon Park Cemetery.

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
