Eddy Mary

Mary Baker Eddy ALS, Handsomely Displayed

A brief ALS inscribed overall in beautiful script and signed by religious theorist and founder of Christian Science Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) as "Mary Baker Eddy." The message is dedicated "To / Mrs. R.C. Grass [?] / With love, / Mary Baker Eddy / A.D. 1900." Matted and framed behind glass under an oval black and white portrait of Eddy wearing her famous 11-diamond cross pin. The paper slip appears laid down, and has a tiny tear at upper left, else near fine. Not examined out of frame. The note measures 5.625" x 2.375" sight size, while the frame measures 10.125" x 13" x .875" overall. The easel support verso is bent, but the frame is fitted for hanging.

Mary Baker Eddy became interested in religion and alternative medicine after her personal struggles with physical illness and mental exhaustion. The confirmed Congregationalist explored mesmerism, magnetism, and spiritualism, as well as Eastern religions like Hinduism, before formulating her own belief system, called Christian Science. Eddy theorized that meditating upon God could heal sickness in lieu of doctors or drugs.

Eddy's Christian Science movement gained traction after the 1875 publication of Science and Health, its definitive manual; the 1879 foundation of the First Church of Christ, Scientist; the publication of weekly magazines such as The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel; and the formation of nation-wide reading rooms and study groups.

In her June 1900 "Message to the Mother Church," issued the same year that Eddy dedicated this message, she reported: "Christian Science already has a hearing and following in the five grand divisions of the globe; in Australia, the Philippine Islands, Hawaiian Islands; and in most of the principal cities, such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Charleston, S. C, Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, St. Louis, Denver, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Montreal, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Pekin[g]. Judging from the number of the readers of my books and those interested in them, over a million of people are already interested in Christian Science; and this interest increases. Churches of this denomination are springing up in the above-named cities, and, thanks to God, the people most interested in this old-new theme of redeeming Love are among the best people on earth and in heaven."
