Marilyn Monroe's signed famous contract with Jantzen Swimwear.

Typed document signed "Marilyn Monroe", indicated as page "2', of a contract between Marilyn Monroe and RKO Radio Pictures, Inc, on onion skin, 8.25" x 11". Dated "January 17th 1952". Expected folds with wrinkling of the sheet. A 4" x 1.5" piece of the sheet was missing but expertly mended & filled in. Several staple holes along top edge. Additionally signed by a representative from Twentieth Century Fox.

This contract document was for Monroe's advertising campaign with Jantzen Knitwear for their swimwear.

Jantzen was known for incorporating Hollywood celebrities, public awareness events, and professional athletes into their promotion activities and advertising campaigns. Jantzen's first endorsement came when swimming legend Johnny Weissmuller appeared in the 1924 Olympic Games in a Jantzen tank suit. Beginning in the 1950s, Jantzen became the first apparel company regularly to sponsor athletes and to use athletes in product endorsements. Jantzen also sponsored "Learn to Swim" and "Clean Water" campaigns used for educating swimmers on health and safety regulations in swimming pools. Other advertising campaigns featured celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, James Garner, and Loretta Young. This contract was in the early phase of the rapid ascent of Monroe to legendary status.

Her contract with Jantzen included some of the following stipulations:

4. "The rights herein granted shall terminate one (1) year from the date hereof.

5. Nothing contained herein shall impose any obligation of liability upon Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation or Miss Monroe.

6. You will apprise Jantzen Kitting Mills of each and every condition hereinabove set forth prior to the use by you or by them of the name and likeness of Miss Monroe hereunder in connection with the products "Jantzen Play Suits, Play clothes and Swim Suits".

A fantastic piece of Monroe memorabilia. This signed contract alludes to many photoshoots with Jantzen which resulted in some of the most famous images of her today.
