Monroe James 1758 - 1831

James Monroe signed Indiana Territory land grant seven years after statehood.

1pp printed land grant on waxed paper signed by 5th U.S. President James Monroe (1758-1831) as "James Monroe" at bottom right corner. Also signed by then Commissioner of the General Land Office John McLean (1785-1861) as "John McLean" at bottom right, and by land grant recipient Joseph J. Plummer as "Joseph J. Plummer" verso along bottom edge. With embossed paper General Land Office seal depicting eagle perched above plow in lower left corner. In near fine condition, with expected folds and minor acute folding to some edges. Handwriting found in the body of the document is faint but Monroe's signature is large and dark. Land grant document measures 15.5" x 10".

Certificate #2893 granted Joseph J. Plummer of Hamilton County, Ohio (located in the southwestern corner of modern day Ohio) eighty acres of land found across the border in the southeastern corner of modern day Indiana. The land was comprised of "The last half of the North West quarter of section thirty-two in Township Sixteen, of Range eight in the District of Brookville and state of Indiana".

This signed land grant testifies to a period of rapid western expansion. Ohio, where our land grant recipient lived, entered the Union in 1803, followed by Louisiana in 1812 and Indiana in 1816. During James Monroe's two presidential terms, five states joined the Union: Mississippi in 1817, Illinois in 1818, Alabama in 1819, Maine in 1820, and Missouri in 1821.
