One page letter on stationary stock, typed. Expected folds. Fine condition.

A spectacular letter for a Gone With The Wind collector. A personalized lengthy letter signed by Margaret Mitchell and typed on her personal stationary noting her "unexpected limelight" and rapid fame which came about from her infamous book published just 5 weeks earlier. Gone With The Wind caused a sensation in Atlanta, received the Pulitzer prize in 1937, and then went on to make a block buster movie staring Clark Gable and won 9 academy awards. Her letter, dated August 8, 1936, just 5 weeks after the publication of Gone With the Wind, pens poignant comments such as "While in New York I was so harried with business matters …", and in reference to reviewing the local papers she reflects "the things the home-folks write about my book touch my heart far more than those written by outsiders". But perhaps the most salient comment is her reference to her newly found fame when she notes "The reason I am laid up now is from the pressure of crowds and completely unexpected limelight."

A wonderful revealing letter about this important period of Mitchell's life, not only discussing her sudden fame, but also reflecting on her health. While the book drew some criticism for its romanticized view of the Old South and its slaveholding elite, its epic tale of war, passion, and loss captivated readers far and wide.
