Description:

Militaria - General Robert C. Richardson, Jr.'s 4-Star General Flag! Flag, 51" x 38". Two sided, gold-fringed flag of red with four white stars embroidered on each side. Fine condition.

Gen. Robert C. Richardson, Jr. (1882-1954) commanded the U.S. Army, Pacific (Hawaiian Department) during the height of World War II in 1943 until his retirement in 1946. During that time he was also named Military Governor of Hawaii and Commanding General of U.S. Army Forces in the Pacific Ocean Areas.

During his Hawaiian command, Gen. Richardson oversaw the construction in Fort Shafter on Oahu of what is now called Richardson Hall in a remarkably short time of 49 days. Known as the "Pineapple Pentagon" during the war, it has remained the planning and operational support centers for soldiers of the U.S. Army, Pacific, since 1944. In 1944, Richardson went to Saipan to review Army troops and present awards. He did this without first consulting with Gen. Holland Smith, USMC, who had operational control there, and who became angry with Richardson. Richardson is said to have replied to Smith that "you cannot push the Army around the way you have been doing."

Promoted to 3-Star Lieutenant General in June 1943, he retired in 1946. Among Gen. Richardson's many awards are the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, and the Officer Legion of Honor from France. Richardson died on March 2, 1954. He was posthumously promoted to full 4-Star General on July 19, 1954, by special act of U.S. Congress, Public Law 83-508. His family was sent the 4-Star General flag here offered.
