Marc Chagall Signed Presentation Book With Incredible Original Angel Drawing!
SB
A first edition hardcover copy of a French-language illustrated book by modern French-Russian artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985), "Les Céramiques et Sculptures de Chagall" ["Chagall's Ceramics and Sculptures"] (Monaco: Editions André Sauret/Charles Sorlier, printed by Les Presses des Imprimeries Réunies S.A. in Lausanne, Switzerland, 1972). 1973. Zurich, Switzerland. Signed by Chagall on the half title page, where he has also added an incredible original drawing in colored pencil. The book features 220 black and white as well as color illustrations. A complete copy, including the original lithograph frontispiece, "La Nuit," by Mourlot Frères, Paris, France (pages 11-14). In beige publisher's cloth, the binding by Les Ateliers Busenhart, Lausanne, Switzerland. With the original dust jacket. Expected wear including edge toning and isolated grubbiness within. Minor bumping and isolated chips to the dust jacket. Else very good to near fine. 249pp. 9.875" x 13.125" x 1.5." Folio.

This special presentation copy was signed and inscribed by Chagall on the half title page as: "Zurich / 1973 / Pour / Laura et / Ruggero / Bises / en / bon / souvenir / Marc Chagall" ["Zurich / 1973 / For / Laura and / Ruggero / Kisses / in / fond / memory / Marc Chagall."] Chagall has supplemented his dedication with an original drawing in orange, turquoise, red, and green colored pencil. The double-page drawing consists of a winged figure, most certainly an angel, at left; and a foliate wreath surrounding the printed half title. Chagall has contemporaneously overwritten some of his inscription - like the date - in pen. The drawing spanning two pages measures approximately 14" x 12" alone.

Chagall frequently depicted religious subjects in his artwork: Old Testament figures, angels, and even God. Chagall's suite of prints, "Bible Series" (1930-1956), commissioned by French art dealer Ambroise Vollard, consisted of 105 etchings depicting Biblical stories.
