Marc Chagall Signed "Moses" Offset Lithographic Exhibition Poster
Signed artwork
An offset lithographic exhibition poster depicting Moses, signed at the bottom by modern French-Russian artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985) as "Marc Chagall." N.d., n.p. The French-language poster reads, from top to bottom: "Reims - Musée des Beaux-Arts / Marc Chagall / Vitraux Pour La Cathédrale de Metz / Sculptures, Céramiques, Gravures - Juin - Juillet - Aout 1960," thus advertising an art exhibit of Chagall's prints, ceramics, sculptures, and the stained glass windows he had just designed for Metz Cathedral, displayed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rheims, France between June - August 1960. Printed "Mourlot, Paris" at lower right, referring to Mourlot Frères, the Parisian printmaking studio. Also printed "Plate 15" at lower right. Gentle toning, else near fine. Not examined out of the mat. The sight size of the poster is 9.625" x 13.625" while the overall matted size is 15" x 19."

The poster shows Moses receiving two tablets from a heavenly hand above, while the Star of David glimmers at top. Chagall frequently depicted religious subjects in his artwork: Old Testament figures, angels, and even God. Chagall returned to Moses again and again throughout his career, sometimes depicting Moses with horns (an artistic tradition stemming from an unfortunate mistranslation of ancient religious text.) Chagall produced three stained glass windows for Metz Cathedral between 1958 and the 1960s.
