Rock 'n Roll

8" x 10" black and white glossy promotional photo of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, circa 1960s, signed in blue ball-point pen as "Mahalia Jackson, Sincerely yours". In very good condition, with minor scattered wrinkles and light superficial marks throughout. Some isolated discolored spots to white margin well-outside of photo. The signature has faded partly to magenta. Accompanied by a copy of JSA Letter of Authenticity from group lot.

The William Morris Agency issued this promotional photo of Mahalia Jackson performing onstage. "The Queen of Soul" is shown in mid-song, wearing a white gown simply adorned by a crucifix, and with both arms outspread in a jubilant gesture.

Mahalia Jackson was born in 1911 in New Orleans. Her talent for gospel singing was recognized in church after the teenager relocated to Chicago during the Great Migration. The contralto released about thirty records during her fifty-year-long career, singing gospel music standards like "Amazing Grace", "Go Tell it on the Mountain", and "Silent Night". Jackson used her celebrity to fundraise for the Civil Rights movement, and also broke many color barriers while performing. For example, she was the first gospel performer invited to Carnegie Hall, and she performed at John F. Kennedy's inaugural ball.
