Description:

Churchill Winston

Lord Randolph Churchill ALS, British Politician and Winston Churchill's Dad

1p ALS inscribed overall on "2 Connaught Place. W." letterhead and signed by British statesman Lord Randolph Henry Churchill as "Randolph I Churchill" at lower right. The cream watermarked stationery paper is bifold, with the remaining pages blank. Minor mounting traces on fourth page and expected light paper folds throughout, else near fine. Each page measures 5" x 8."

On May 21, 1887, Lord Randolph Churchill accepted a dinner invitation from prestigious urologist Sir Henry Thompson (1820-1904). "It will give me the greatest pleasure to dine with you on June 8th + I thank you very much for yr kind invitation," Churchill wrote. The Churchills lived at 2 Connaught Place near Hyde Park in northwestern London between 1882-1892.

Lord Randolph Churchill had been ousted from his government position of Leader of the House of Commons just five months earlier, in early 1887. This signaled the end of a promising career that had included posts as Secretary of State for India and Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The young and flamboyant British politician had seemed earmarked for glory. His brilliant speaking style, his unusual reform platform in the Conservative Party, and his beautiful American wife Jennie Jerome promised a bright future in turn-of-the-century British politics. But declining health and dementia led to his downfall and death at age 45. Eldest son Winston Churchill (1874-1965) would follow his father into politics.
