A lovely quote by Chase of  "Above all things: Holdfast that which is good."

Chase was a righteous man with strong convictions, whose opinions often differed from Lincoln. He undoubtedly felt that he was superior to, and more capable than Lincoln in handling the affairs of state. In 1864, following an embarrassing incident regarding an appointment, Chase submitted his resignation for a third time. This time Lincoln unexpectedly accepted it, stating, "I have nothing to unsay; and yet you and I have reached a point of mutual embarrassment in our official relations which it seems cannot be overcome or longer sustained consistently with the public service."

Following this, there was a short revival of the promotion to have Chase as standard-bearer of the Republican Party in 1864. In time this fizzled and Chase came to support Lincoln. When Chief Justice Taney died in October 1864, Lincoln appointed Chase Chief Justice of the United States. His tenure as Chief Justice covered the swearing in of Andrew Johnson as President, the difficult Reconstruction period after the war, and presiding over the trial of Jefferson Davis. To the end he never gave up hope of becoming president, but his support withered away in time.
