Lord Mountbatten Signed "Time" Magazine Cover Celebrating His Fearsome Commandos
DS
A detached front cover of the June 8, 1942 issue of "Time" magazine, Vol. XXXIX, No. 23, bearing an adhesive label signed by Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900-1979) as "Louis Mountbatten" at lower right. N.d. but the card attached verso indicates it was after Mountbatten's 1943 promotion to full admiral and after his 1947 elevation to the title of Earl Mountbatten of Burma. N.p. The front cover depicts an illustration after Ernest Hamlin Baker of Mountbatten's face haloed by flames and hovering above a group of gun-toting Commandos, and is captioned "Mountbatten of the Commandos / His boys in blackface will see the day of wrath." The signature label is affixed to the magazine cover, which in turn is affixed to a black stock mount, which in turn is affixed with a card reading "With the Compliments / of / Admiral of the Fleet / Earl Mountbatten of Burma" verso. Expected gentle wrinkles and minimal edge wear to the magazine cover, else near fine. The actual size of the magazine cover is 8.25" x 11.5" while the overall size of the mount is 9" x 12."

The "Time" cover story about Mountbatten and his Commandos was discussed in the World Battlefronts, Battle of Europe section (pp. 27-29) of the full-length magazine, entitled "Why Are We Waiting?" In the article, the author asserts that Mountbatten, recently promoted to Vice Admiral, Lieutenant General, and Air Vice Marshal, was only biding his time, motivated not by undue caution, but out of risk-averse preparedness. In part: "When that day of wrath comes, Lord Louis' terrible boys in blackface, the men of the Commandos, will be there to help undertake the first daring assault [of the invasion of Europe]" (p. 27.) About two months earlier, on March 28, 1942, Mountbatten's Commandos had successfully neutralized the heavily-fortified Nazi-controlled dry dock at St. Nazaire. This was a critical victory, and one less place that the Allies would have to worry about before D-Day.

Close royal relative and member of the House of Windsor, World War I and II veteran, and last Viceroy of India, Mountbatten was assassinated in an IRA-planted boat explosion in Mullaghmore, Ireland in August 1979.
