Historical Background

John Ross served in the 14th Virginia Regiment with the Continental Army from January 1777 for three years. The regiment fought at the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth, and participated in the siege of Charleston, South Carolina. Ross spent the winter of 1777-1778 with the regiment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Most of the regiment was captured on May 12, 1780, by the British Army at the end of the siege of Charleston. It is unclear whether Ross was still with the regiment at that time, but his service in South Carolina may have provided him with the connections to purchase these slaves and take them back to Bedford County, Virginia.

In 1810, John Ross appears in the census as owning three slaves in Christiansburg, Virginia.

“DC. B.C” following Alexander’s name abbreviates “Deputy Clerk, Bedford County.”

John Ross (1757-1835) was born in Scotland and immigrated to Virginia, where he settled in Bedford County. In 1776, he entered service as a private in the Virginia Line, and served for three years. He later moved to Adair County, Kentucky. He married Eleanor Mitchell in 1784, and they had nine children before her death in 1805. He married Nancy Ellis in 1811.

Robert Alexander (1746-1820) was born in Virginia, the son of Robert Alexander (1710-1783), founder of Augusta Academy (today Washington & Lee University) in Lexington. The elder Robert Alexander served as rector and president of that school from 1749 to 1762.  The younger Robert Alexander served in the Revolutionary War and was commissioned a 1st lieutenant in 1778 and as a captain in 1779. He served as Deputy Clerk of Bedford County from 1772 to 1782. When Campbell County was formed from Bedford County in 1782, Alexander served as the first clerk of Campbell County until his death. He also served as clerk of the Campbell County Circuit Court from 1809 to 1819.

Henry Robinson was a merchant and mill owner in the Botetourt County area of Virginia.
