Description:

Leonard Peltier FBI Wanted Posters - He Has Been In Prison Since 1977

An attractive display consisting of two vintage FBI Wanted Posters issued for Leonard Peltier (born 1944), a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of the Chippewa Nation, now serving two life sentences in Federal prison for the murder of two FBI agents in 1975. The wanted posters show minor expected wear commensurate with age and use, such as flattened paper folds. A faint impression of the recipient's address printed on the reverse of the top poster is slightly visible; of course these fold-out broadsides would have been mailed to agents. The bottom poster has some minor water stains near the bottom edge. Else very good to near fine. Matted and framed behind glass. The sight size of the larger poster measures 10.125" x 15.5" while the sight size of the smaller poster measures 7.625" square. The overall size of the frame is 14.75" x 28.75" x .75." Not examined out of the frame.

The top Wanted Poster for Leonard Peltier (FBI No. 631,091 D) was issued in connection with Federal charges of interstate flight and the attempted murder of a police officer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in August 1974. Wanted Flyer No. 481, July 25, 1975. Featured information includes mug shots, known suspect aliases, physical description, and fingerprint classification.

Peltier asserts in his prison autobiography, "Prison Writings: My Life is My Sun Dance" (1999) that these were "phony charges" and that he was actually entrapped by two plainclothes policemen.

The bottom Wanted Poster for Leonard Peltier (FBI No. 631,091 D) was issued after the fatal shootings of two FBI agents, Jack Coler and Richard Williams, at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota on June 26, 1975. Identification Order 4681, December 3, 1975.

Peltier was charged with the first-degree murder of the two Federal agents in November 1975, and Peltier was named one of the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives a month later. Arrested in February 1976 and convicted in 1977, Peltier has spent 46 years in prison (and counting.) His clemency pleas to four different presidents (Clinton, Obama, Bush II, and Trump) were denied. Indigenous activists have rallied at the time of this writing (September 2023) for Peltier's release.
