Description:

Reed Walter 1851 - 1902 Legendary science rarity, Dr. Walter Reed signed typhoid letter and archive!
The Reed TLS is on official 8" x 10" stationary from the American Medical Museum in Washington to Lieut. James S. Wilson, Assistant Surgeon at Camp Cuba Libre. Minor staining and toning at top, but signature is bold. "We leave for Montauk tomorrow"; Reed would join his fellow troops in the Spanish American War, where he would study disease at the encampments. He acknowledges receipt of documents as explained below in brown ink as being Reed's attempt to pinpoint the location of typhoid.

Additional letters included in the archive include a transmittal and TLS on War Department stationery of J. R. Kean about Major Shakespeare's report concerning transmission of typhoid from one tent mate to another. Also a carbon general order from the Seventh Army substituting another doctor for Wilson and which appears to be approved in signature by Wilson. Also a note in the same hand as the annotations on the bottom of the Reed letter: "These papers refer to Report on the Origin and Spread of typhoid Fever in the W. S. Military Camps during the Spanish American War of 1898 by Walter Reed ..." and a TLS by the Assistant Surgeon General to Wilson.

Also included are two period photos (mixed condition) approx. 9" x 7", one being a camp photo clearly identifying Reed and Wilson as well as the other officers.

Reed alone is of legendary rarity, with only one example showing in auction records in 40 years, and that example having been sold 20 years ago! We have handled only one other in our career since 1979. We know of one other inferior example of just a single letter being offered where Reed is examining urine samples of a patient. This letter alone is offered at $6,500.
