Description:

Lady Bird Johnson TLS Re: Alabama Antebellum Mansions With Bonus Pearl S. Buck SB

A three-piece lot, comprised of a typed letter signed and inscribed by Lady Bird Johnson (1912-2007); a copy of "A Certain Star" signed and dedicated by Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973); and a copy of "Ante-Bellum Mansions of Alabama" signed by the author, Ralph Hammond (1916-2010). The pieces are connected by way of Ralph Hammond, a published author and Alabama poet laureate who served as press secretary to Alabama Governor Jim Folsom (1908-1987).

The lot includes:

1. A 1p typed letter signed and inscribed with 21 words by Lady Bird Johnson as "Lady Bird Johnson / Especially the Lowndesboro / homes intrigued me / as I've visited my / cousin, Mr. Neil Robinson, / there many times and / remember seeing them." The letter dated July 8, 1964 on "The White House / Washington" letterhead shows expected flattened folds, else near fine. 6.25" x 9.25." Accompanied by its original transmittal envelope, neatly letter-opened.

Ralph Hammond published his survey of domestic Alabama architecture, "Ante-Bellum Mansions of Alabama," in 1951. Evidently Hammond had sent the First Lady a copy of his book around 1964, when Hammond was then serving as the Mayor of Arab, Alabama. Both of Lady Bird's parents were from Alabama, and Lady Bird often visited her Alabama relatives.

2. A limited library edition of Pearl S. Buck, "A Certain Star" (New York: The American Weekly, 1957), 23pp. Signed and inscribed with 8 words on the front loose endpaper as "The / Honorable James E. Folsom / with greetings from / Pearl S. Buck." In publisher's buckram boards. Near fine. 6.75" x 9.875" x .375."

Pearl S. Buck dedicated this book copy to Alabama Governor Jim Folsom, for whom Hammond served as press secretary and speech writer during Folsom's two terms, 1947-1951 and 1955-1959.

3. A first edition hardcover copy of Ralph Hammond, "Ante-Bellum Mansions of Alabama" (New York: Bonanza Books, 1951), 196pp. Signed by the author Ralph Hammond as "Ralph Hammond" on the full title page. With green cloth-covered boards and a crisp original publisher's dust jacket, not price-clipped. Some musty odor, else near fine. 8.625" x 11.25" x .75."
