A signed appointment by King George V of England. St. James' Court, London, dated May 31, 1929. Boldly signed "George R. I." at the top left corner and countersigned at the bottom right corner "W. L. Mackenzie King" as Secretary of State for External Affairs. The document granted royal approval of an appointment nomination advanced by 31st U.S. President Herbert Hoover to appoint George H. Butler as a U.S. Vice Consul at Montreal. Bearing two blind-embossed seals, the first a George V seal for the Home Department, "GEORGIUS V D.G BRITANNIA RUM OMNIUM REX. F. D IND IMP," under the royal signature; and the second a "Secretary of State for External Affairs" to the left of King's signature.The document has been matted and framed to the overall size of 26" x 21.5", measuring 16.25" x 12.25" (sight). With flattened folds and faint soiling at the folds and near the edges. Boldly signed.

"George by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India, &c, &c, &c. To All and Singular Our loving Subjects to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting. Whereas Our Good Friend the President of the United States of America has by a Commission bearing date the Fourth day of April 1929, appointed Mr. George H. Butler to be Vice Consul at Montreal and We having approved of this appointment…We hereby require that you do receive, countenance, and as there may be occasion, favourably assist him…in the exercise of his Office…"

George V succeeded his father Edward VII in 1910. Over the course of his 26-year-long reign, George V would shape imperial and domestic British policy during World War I, the rise of Communism and Fascism, and the beginning of both the Irish and Indian independence movements.

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
