Written on watermarked stationery from Isington Mill, Montgomery mentions his recent return from Cape Town and makes plans to meet the recipient at their new apartment, currently inhabited by notable British publisher George Rainbird (1905-1986). Exhibits flattened letter folds and creasing to left middle and top right corner. Else, good condition.

In full:
"I have just returned from my six-weeks sea voyage: much restored in health. I wrote to you from Cape Town before we sailed for home. Can you tell me when you and your team mate (name unknown!) will be in London during the Easter vacation? I want to have a talk with you both, and to take you to see your flat: the premises in Bloomsbury Place have fallen through because of damp and dry rot. Your flat will now be on the top floor of 2 Hyde Park Place, London W-2, overlooking the Park. The flat is at present occupied by George Rainbird himself, and his wife, and they are going to move to a new flat nearby."

Bernard Law Montgomery was a senior British Army officer who served in the First World War, the Irish War of Independence and the Second World War. After being present at Dunkirk, Prime Minister Winston Churchill went on to appoint him commander of the Eighth Army in the Western Desert in 1942. For the next two months, Montgomery would train his soldiers in preparation to effectively defend the Egyptian city of El Alamein against German forces led by General Erwin Rommel. Their victory at the battle fought between October and November 1942 proved to be a turning point in the North African campaign, and indeed, the war as a whole.
