Grant Julia

Julia Grant Important ALS

4pp autograph letter entirely engrossed by former First Lady Julia Dent Grant (1826-1902), and signed by her as "Julia D. Grant". Written in Washington, D.C. on December 27, 1897 on black-bordered mourning stationery. Addressed to a Mr. Campbell about purchasing some bonds--no doubt to secure her uncertain financial future. Expected light paper folds. Minor age toning and isolated stains, else very good. 8vo. Provenance: From the Sanford Mock Collection.

Mrs. Grant writes in part: "Your very welcome letter was received on Saturday, Christmas Day. I thought you had entirely forgotten about the Water Works bonds that pay such delightfully generous interest. As I thought you had forgotten our conversation I have been a little careless as to my bank balance these Christmas times, and I am not certain what it is exactly. I am sure though I can take four of your bonds and perhaps five. I have sent your letter to my son Col. Fred to have my balance made up and communicate with you, send draft &c. I am sure this is a safe and good investment else neither you or Mr. Moffatt would let me touch it. When do the bonds run out and are they paid in gold when they do run out. Ask Mr. Moffatt if he and you could not let me into a good grub stake? I should like it above all things, I fear I am just a trifle excited over this investment…"

When U.S. Grant died of throat cancer in July 1885, the future looked bleak for his widow and her growing extended family. Grant died almost penniless after investing in a Wall Street brokerage firm, where he and his son were swindled by a partner. Reduced to living on charitable and governmental grants, Julia preferred to have an income of her own. It is surprising, however, that she would chose investing as an income-generator considering her husband's negative experience!
