Judge Roy Bean DS Protecting a Witness to Another Jurisdiction
DS
A legal document signed by Roy Bean, signed as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 6. 1p on lined paper, 8" x 9.25", undated [ca. 1880s], Pecos County, Texas. Within, Bean addresses Sheriff John Edgar of the same county to protect a witness in the case of Texas vs. B. A. Durham. With related docketing on reverse from Pecos County. Almost undetectable professional reinforcement at fold lines on the verso, with an isolated tear at lower right corner. Small pin holes present to upper margin, with general toning throughout. Otherwise, good display condition. A desirable example!

Bean writes to the Pecos County sheriff in part:

"…I, Roy Bean, a Justice of the Peace in and for said county and State, Precinct No. 6, herewith commit into your custody for safe keeping one Martain [sic] Nester, a witness for the State in the above entitled case. He, the said Nester, not being able or willing to enter into bond for or to give his testimony in the same.

Roy Bean
J.P. in and for said State and County, and Precinct No. 6"

Roy Bean (ca. 1825-1903) was an American saloon-keeper and Justice of the Peace in Val Verde County, Texas. He first established his saloon near the Pecos River in 1882, with the nearest court at the time being 120 miles away. A Texas Ranger therefore requested that a local law jurisdiction be set up in the area and on August 2, 1882, Bean was appointed justice of the peace for the new Precinct 6. It was during this time that Bean converted his saloon into a part-time courtroom, branding himself as "The Only Law West of the Pecos". As Judge, he became known for his unusual and often self-serving verdicts, earning a notorious reputation throughout the West Texas frontier.
