JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1767-1848) Autograph manuscript invitation, docketed on the verso in the hand of John Quincy Adams, September 1810, no place, 2 pps. with writing on recto and verso, 8.5" x 7.5" Invitation is written in French, by the Chancellor of Russia asking John Quincy Adams, then United States Minister to Russia, to dinner, docketed on the verso by Adams: "Romanzoff - Count 3/15 Septr. 1810". With remnants of original wax seal. Original marks from folding and opening, fine condition.

This handwritten invitation in French was sent from the Chancellor of Russia, Count Nicholas Romanzoff (Nikolay Rumyantsev), dates to John Quincy Adams' term as United States Minister to Russia. John Quincy Adams' "acceptance of appointment by President James Madison as minister to St. Petersburg in 1809 evoked severe criticism, even from his parents. Adams defended his action, however, as one of principle against political factionalism. He achieved some trade concessions while in Russia and served as an intermediary in Czar Alexander's effort to mediate a peace ending the War of 1812 between Britain and the United States. While the British declined Russia's intervention, they agreed to direct negotiations in which Adams served as one of the five American commissioners." (ANB)
