Description:

Pulitzer Joseph 1847 - 1911 Joseph Pulitzer signs huge check to silversmith and watchmaking company Mermod Jaccard

Check No. 425 issued from St. Louis, Missouri on "Jany 16, 1882" in the amount of $338.50 payable to "Mermod Jaccard &c" signed by Post Dispatch President "Joseph Pulitzer" in black fountain pen lower right. The check was issued from the State Savings Association on "Office of the Post Dispatch" letterhead with a graphic of sparking telegraph wires at left encircled by motto: "Three Papers United In One, The Only Evening Journal in St. Louis". The check is endorsed "Mermod Jaccard" verso, and enclosed in a PSA/DNA certified slab graded NM 7 measuring 12.25" x 5.5".

Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911) was an American newspaper publisher and founder of the Columbia School of Journalism. Although today Pulitzer is known for the eponymous prize which recognizes artistic and journalistic achievements, during his lifetime he was associated with the development of "yellow journalism". This sensationalist way of reporting news events aimed to increase circulation and sales. Pulitzer's journalistic methods were quite successful, as we know from this check. This check shows that Pulitzer spent $338.50 at Mermod & Jaccard Jewelry Co., a swanky St. Louis-based emporium that carried an array of men's watches, jewelry, and fine silver hollowware and flatware. In 2017 dollars, this would be the equivalent of roughly $7,687.29.

The check is slabbed and graded by PSA/DNA as NM 7.
