Description:

Pughe J 1870 - 1909 J.S. Pughe published pen and ink political illustration art
Illustration original art. Pen and Ink on bristol board, 23" x 14.5" . Soft soiling/handling marks, with several small faded stains. Faint pencil marks. Verso with publishers identification of "Overlay Dep't A.M. Sat Oct 18 1902" Signed by J.S. Pughe lower right "J.S. Pughe".

A spectacular inked final published political cartoon. Highly detailed and vibrantly inked. Depicting a well dressed gent in a suit sporting a derby hat and goatee, riding a horse, peering down at a second gent with cigar, and top hat walking away. Drawn in an era pre-vehicles, the road is obviously meant for horses and the scene appears to show a farm. Lovely detail including the sun cast shadows of both figures with hash mark ink.

Although unclear which publication this was ultimately included in, J.S. Pughe was a regular contributor to numerous magazines including the New York Recorder, Brooklyn Life and Puck Magazine. Political works by Pughe were quite popular and were included in a recent digital exhibit "Politics in Graphic Detail", created by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Signed by Pughe lower right, this large spectacular piece is in great condition and would display beautifully framed.
