Lister's correspondent was Dr. William Bulloch (1868-1941), head of the Serum Department at the British Institute of Preventative Medicine since 1895. (The Institute, co-founded by Lister in 1891, was later renamed the Jenner Institute in 1898, and the Lister Institute in 1903.) Dr. Bulloch was a Professor of Bacteriology at the London Hospital Medical School and the author of several publications.

Lord Lister was a veteran researcher of infectious diseases by 1896. The British Institute had, under Lister's direction, developed a commercial serum therapy against diphtheria in 1895. Known as the "father of modern surgery", Lister had pioneered the study and use of antiseptics by the mid-1860s to reduce the spread of disease and prevent infections. Lister implemented the systematic use of carbolic acid during surgeries (both topically and aerosolized), and insisted that doctors wash their hands, sterilize their instruments, and wear clean garments. These simple changes reduced secondary infections precipitously, and, in conjunction with Louis Pasteur's research into microbiology, laid the foundations for understanding modern germ theory. Lister is also credited with developing new surgical techniques and equipment.
