Edward Livingston was the younger brother of famous diplomat Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813). Born in Columbia County, New York, he graduated from Princeton University in 1781 and was admitted to the bar two years later. He served in the House of Representatives from 1795-1801; was Mayor of New York City between 1801-1803; and served on Andrew Jackson's staff at the Battle of New Orleans (1815). He drew up Louisiana's Legal Code (sometimes called the Livingston Code), adopting its civil and criminal statutes from the Napoleonic Code. He served as Louisiana Senator from 1829-1831 and afterwards was appointed Secretary of State in the Jackson administration. Following this post, Livingston served as U.S. Minister to France, resigning just a year before his death.
