An autograph letter signed by diplomat, statesman, and Revolutionary soldier John Armstrong. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 10", Rhinebeck, dated November 10, 1811. Signed "J Armstrong" and addressed to Alexander Phoenix. Armstrong shares advice with his friend about a recent business hardship and offers his support. Docketing on verso. With flattened folds, toning, and foxing. Loss and tears on the address page from where the seal was broken. Boldly signed by Armstrong.

In part:

"I found your letter here this evening on my return from a little excursion among my tenants & one also from Mr. Ingraham. Be assured that no one enters more entirely into your feelings on this occasion than I do nor would any one do more to relieve you from the very painful situation you are both in. Whatever I can do to accomplish this object shall be done. From a first view of the two courses to which you have been advised…perhaps the alternative might be usefully offered -- leaving the election to Congress. With regards to the memorial, I would chearfully [sic] draw it for you, did I know the business sufficiently in detail - you may however safely trust yourself with that part of the business - a short & clear exposition is all that is wanted…I will most cordially write in pressing my friends and acquaintances in Congress to grant you the indulgence you request from them…"

Through the end of the 18th century and throughout most of the 19th century, the Phoenix and Ingraham families were related by marriage. Nathaniel G. Ingraham (ca. 1761–1827) was working and residing in lower Manhattan, with his brother-in-law, Alexander Phoenix (1778–1863) as his business partner in the firm of Phoenix, Ingraham, and Nexsen. The firm, established in 1803, was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1811 with losses totaling $467,547.61. All three men were committed to debtors' prison, where they stayed until an Act was passed on March 3, 1813 which gained their freedom.

John Armstrong Jr. (1758-1843) was a delegate to the Continental Congress, U.S. Senator from New York, and United States Secretary of War under President James Madison. He also served as United States Minister to France from 1804 to 1810.
