Joan Mir' PSA NM-MT 8 HUGE Signature on 1969 Artist-Designed Ch'teau Mouton Rothschild Wine Label

A sample copy of the Ch'teau Mouton Rothschild 1969 harvest wine label, boldly signed on the reverse by Spanish Surrealist artist Joan Mir' (1893-1983) as "Mir'." The signature, featuring two side brackets and an underlined paraph, measures approximately 3" x 2.25" alone. N.d. but probably ca. 1969, when Mir' created that year's artist-designed wine label. N.p. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. The French-language label is embossed "Specimen" at upper left. Near pristine. The label measures 3.875" x 5.625" while the slab measures 6.625" x 10.125."

The vineyard at Ch'teau Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, about 55km northwest of Bordeaux, France. It was acquired (and renamed) by French financier Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853. The winery, which was granted the prestigious Premier Cru Class' distinction in 1973, is still in operation today. The Ch'teau Mouton Rothschild invited some of the world's most celebrated modern artists to design its wine labels, first in 1924, and later between 1945 and 2020. According to the winery's official website, the 1969 harvest wine label designed by Joan Mir' depicts a plump red wine grape at the center, flanked by blue and yellow motifs, the Rothschild Family's official racing colors. Other artists who have designed Ch'teau Mouton Rothschild wine labels include Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Marc Chagall, Keith Haring, Georges Braque, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Jeff Koons, Robert Motherwell, Jean Cocteau, and Wassily Kandinsky, to name a few.

Mir', a Catalan artist, relocated to Paris in 1920 to benefit from its burgeoning artistic, literary, and intellectual scene. His first solo exhibition was arranged at the Galerie La Licorne in Paris in 1921. Mir' lived in France and summered in Catalonia up until the Spanish Civil War. Paris remained a frequent destination even after Mir' moved to Barcelona in the late 1940s.
