Jay Gould ALS on mourning stationary, written from his Lindhurst estate

 

Bi-fold ALS on black bordered mourning stationary of Lindhurst Irvington on the Hudson letterhead, 4.75" x 7.75". Dated "Sept 26, 1889" and signed by Jay Gould in full signature "Jay Gould". Penned to the recto of the first page, with Gould's signature on the recto of the second page balance of pages blank. Near fine with expected folds.

 

A lovely ALS  penned by Jay Gould from his Lyndhurst estate.

Lyndhurst, is a Gothic Revival country house that sits in its own 67-acre (27 ha) park beside the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, about a half mile south of the Tappan Zee Bridge. The" house", which resemble an enormous castle was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

 

Gould's letter is shown below:

 

"My dear Sir

Permit me to introduce my friend Dr. John P Mann who wishes to procure some information in reference to some Richmond Enterprises - If you are at liberty to do so and can aid him I will consider it a special personal favor.

Jay Gould"

 

Jay Gould had passed away only 3 years after this letter. His reputation surpassed him as a businessman who was so unscrupulous and had business practices that were so ruthless that they would be illegal today. Throughout his life he made and lost several fortunes. By the time of his death in 1892, he was believed to be worth over $100 million.
