Jay Gould ALS on mourning stationary

Bi-fold ALS on black bordered mourning stationary, 4.5" x 7". Dated "Jany 22, 1889" and signed by Jay Gould in full signature "Jay Gould". Penned to the recto of the first page, balance of pages blank. Light handling marks, else near fine with expected folds.

On January 13, 1889, Jay Gould's wife, who had been suffering from an extended stroke leaving her semi-conscious had passed away. This personal note reflects on his great loss, and her passing:

" … I write to thank you for your kind letter of sympathy with me in my recent great sorrow.

Yours truly

Jay Gould"

Jay Gould had passed away only 3 years after this letter. His reputation surpassed him as a businessman who was so unscrupulous and had business practices that were so ruthless that they would be illegal today. Throughout his life he made and lost several fortunes. By the time of his death in 1892, he was believed to be worth over $100 million.
