James Monroe ALS "disturbances in Europe"
ALS
An autograph letter signed by James Monroe, concerning a debt owned and mentioning hostilities in Europe during the French Revolution. 2pp (front and back), measuring 8" x 10", Philadelphia, dated February 10, 1793. Signed "Jas, Monroe" and addressed to John Nicolson Esq. Accompanied by the original transmittal cover, addressed on verso with additional docketing. The letter has flattened mail folds and small separations at the edges. Toning along the right edge. Light dampstaining at the top third, which affects Monroe's signature. Still boldly signed.

The letter in part:
"As the command of the sum mentioned will be necessary before I leave this, and in case it will not be convenient for you to supply it some immediate orders to my manager in Virga (by tomorrows post) will be necessary, you will excuse my troubling you again today on the subject…to state the periods at wh. the accommodation will be required, to enable you to determine whether it will be in your power to furnish it. I shall want about 500 dolrs on the 20th of this month - & the residue any time before I have this suppose the 10th of next month. The whole might be postponed to the better period if necessary, tho it wod be more convenient as stated in the first instance…I cannot but suppose the disturbances in Europe will make property of this kind more saleable in this country this spring…"

Although James Monroe owned multiple properties over the course of his lifetime, his plantations were never profitable. He frequently incurred debts by his lavish and expensive lifestyle and often sold property (including slaves) to pay them off.

Since 1791, James Monroe had taken sides with the French Revolution, voicing his support in several essays under the pseudonym Aratus. As the 1790s progressed, the French Revolution came to dominate U.S. foreign policy, with British and French raids both threatening U.S. trade with Europe, and George Washington appointed Monroe as his minister (ambassador) to France in 1794 in the hopes of finding a way to avoid war with both countries.
