James Monroe
Washington, D.C., January 1, 1818
James Monroe Signed Land Grant to War of 1812 Soldier, Three Docs. Tied Together
PPDS
Partial Printed Document Signed, "James Monroe", as president, 1p, 13" x 9.5", Washington City, January 1, 1818, granting John Woodworth, "…late a private in Foster's company of the eleventh Regiment of Infantry...one hundred and sixty acres...in the territory of Illinois". Countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office Josiah Meigs. This land grant came in response to an act passed by Congress six years earlier which reserved land for soldiers who enlisted in the War of 1812. Intact paper-covered red wax seal at lower left. Expected age toning and soiling, with darkened handling marks and isolated rust stains. Folds and creasing throughout. Minor edge chipping at top. Overall, in very good condition.

Tied to the grant is a manuscript document signed by John Woodworth and his wife, Cyrene Woodworth, dated July 1, 1819, 2pp front and verso, 13.375" x 12.5". Two paper-covered seals appear beside signatures at lower right, where a third document has been attached, this being a certificate by the clerk of Genesee County in New York, 1p, 7.25" x 5". The deed has flattened folds with separation and loss, which have been previously repaired. Isolated browning, soiling and toning to the deed; the certificate has minor toning and wrinkling. Both are in very good condition overall. To have the original three documents still bound together is very rare, as most land grants appear on the market without an accompanying deed and certificate.

The Military Tract of 1812 is the name of a region of the U.S. territories in what later became western Illinois. Shortly before the War of 1812, Congress reserved the unorganized territory so that quarter-sections of land could be promised to men who enlisted to fight against the British. This encouraged both enlistment and later settlement, although many soldiers eventually sold or traded their plots, as is seen here.
