Jacqueline Kennedy's School Life in Farmington! Two Remarkable Yearbooks From Her Underclassmen Years, 1945-46
Signed book
Two yearbooks from Miss Porter's School once belonging to Jacqueline Kennedy's schoolmate Jane Mershon Baker. Each measuring 7.75" x 10.5", Farmington, CT, ca. 1945 & 1946. Kennedy, who was a year behind Baker, inscribes her graduating yearbook with the optimistic, playful prose of a sixteen year old and signs affectionately throughout as "Jackie". Features moderate wear to covers, including uneven surface scratching, rubbing, and markings; slight fraying at corners with evident wear to spine. General page toning within, with underlining in red pen highlighting Jackie's name throughout. Areas of minor ink smudging present, not materially affecting contents. A rare look into Kennedy's teen years, featuring approximately 120 words in her hand!

Jackie's notes to Jane can be found on page 29 of the 1946 yearbook, as well as on a separate photograph ca. 1945 depicting the two girls and their large group of friends.

In full, she writes:

[On the photograph]: "Dear Jane, I'll always remember that you & I have mustaches in common! There's some white henna to remember me by- Loads of love/ Jackie".

[In the book]: "Dear Baker, Can't wait to have you up to "gay Newport" this summer- where the gayest thing you can find to do is clear out the cow-barn! We can also ride Donny, play tennis, improve our minds- I'm sure the one sobbing man in the town will fall madly in love with you- Am living for the day when you'll track Pittsburgh dirt over the threshold- I'll miss you so next year- It was such fun coming over to see you & Sal & Sue this year & I did wish we could have been near you- So long & lots of love/ Jackie"

In addition to these inscriptions, Jackie can be seen in multiple instances throughout both books, photographed with her classes (first and second years, respectively) and as a member of both the Players Club and the Riding Club. Also pictured is Nancy Tuckerman (1928-2018), Jackie's future White House Social Secretary and lifelong friend. Together with a group of 9 loose photographs, one of which includes the signed and inscribed example from Jackie to Baker. The others, ranging in size from 2" x 3 to 8" x 10", depict Jackie with her friends at school, as well as with her beloved horse, Donny.

Also included is a White House letter from Tuckerman, signed "Nancy", in response to Jane's condolences on the death of baby Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, who died two days after being born prematurely.

After spending grades 1 thru 7 at Manhattan's Chapin School, a young Jacqueline Bouvier would attend first the Holton-Arms School in Northwest Washington, D.C. and later, Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut, from 1944 to 1947. She notably chose Miss Porter's because it was a boarding school that allowed her to distance herself from the her new stepfamily, the Auchinclosses, and because the school placed an emphasis on college preparatory classes. In her senior class yearbook (not included), Bouvier was acknowledged for "her wit, her accomplishment as a horsewoman, and her unwillingness to become a housewife". She later hired her childhood friend Nancy Tuckerman to be her social secretary at the White House in 1963.
