ALS
Autograph letter from Jacqueline Kennedy, likely to Robert McNamara, who she informally refers to as "Bob". 1p on black bordered letterhead bearing the Kennedy family crest, 6.25" x 9.25", no place, July 27, [ca. 1966]. Signed "Jackie" at conclusion, the former First Lady acknowledges his final monetary pledge to the building of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and shows profound gratitude. Docketed in pencil at upper left with the year "'66". Exhibits moderate edge creasing throughout with expected letter fold present at middle. Minor toning at lower right near signature. A very good example overall.

In full:

"Dear Bob,
I came home yesterday- and they showed me your final pledge to the Library.
How can I tell you what I feel? It is just one more proof of what an extraordinary spirit you are- Thank you.
With love,
Jackie"

The establishment of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum first began shortly after his death in 1963 when Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei was chosen as its designer. Despite initial success in fundraising and strong public interest, the project saw a continuous series of challenges and setbacks which halted construction for over a decade. In May 1971, the presidential library of Kennedy's successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, was dedicated at the University of Texas at Austin. Later in 1975, the site of the JFK Library was transferred to Columbia Point in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston following a surge in opposition to having the structure built at its intended site in Cambridge. Construction of Pei's design finally began in 1977, and the Library was officially dedicated on October 20, 1979.
