Description:

Kennedy Jacqueline

Jackie Kennedy ALS to Family Friend, Elisa Sullivan

1p ALS inscribed overall and initialed by Jackie Kennedy (1929-1994) as "J." near bottom. Written on cream blue-lined paper in blue felt tip pen, ca. 1990s New York City. In very good to near fine condition, with expected paper folds and minor wrinkles. The "D" of "Dear Elisa" is slightly smudged. From the collection of Elisa Sullivan (1935-2012), Janet Bouvier Auchincloss's personal caregiver and companion.

Jackie Kennedy moved to Manhattan's Upper East Side after her husband's assassination. She lived on the 15th floor of a high-rise luxury apartment building at 1040 Fifth Avenue in a palatial 5-bedroom apartment designed by Rosario Candela. The apartment featured a conservatory, library, terrace, wine room, and staff offices, and offered views of Central Park.

Sometime in the 1990s, family friend Elisa Sullivan bunked in one of Jackie's guest bedrooms. Elisa's daughter provides us with the following provenance: "Note left to my mom, Elisa Sullivan, on the kitchen table at Jackie's NY city apartment when my mom went to visit her during the early 1990's."

Jackie wrote lovingly to her house guest:

"Dear Elisa

I'm so sorry I haven't seen you yet in these last 2 busy days

Tomorrow I will be able to give you a big hug

J."

Elisa Sullivan had started working as a caregiver for Jackie's mother in 1979, after Janet was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. After Janet's death in 1989 and Jackie's death in 1994, Elisa worked for Jackie's half-brother Hugh "Yusha" Auchincloss III (1927-2015) as a book-keeper, house-keeper, and chef at Hammersmith Farm.
