Jacqueline Kennedy Signed Letter Alluding to John's Early Affairs

Four page autographed signed letter, written on 3 pages with final page blank.  Penned on letterhead of 'valentino & rita ltd' (a coiffeur in Kensington, London). 8" x 10" on pale yellow paper stock. Signed by Jacqueline Kennedy as "XXX to you / Jackie."  Undated but accompanied by the original light blue mailing envelope, 5.5" x 4.25." Addressed to her mother at "Hammersmith Farm," the address is also penned entirely in the hand of Jacqueline. Postmarked "London 11/18/1955." Letter in fine condition, with the envelope lacking the flap.

Written by Jacqueline two years after her marriage to John Kennedy, Jackie writes to her mother during a long visit to her sister in London. Both were in the hairdresser at the time (thus the explanation for the letterhead).  Jackie giddily writes her mother about her stay with Lee and Lee's husband Michael.

" … The longer I stay here the more I love it - because it isn't till the English really like you that is any fun - I don't envy Lee her 1st months - but now they all adore her + Michael who is becoming renowned as a great wit + dancing man! - + the 1st 2 or 3 times I met them all - it was nice but rather stiff …

… The most fun of all was Ascot - I never dreamed a race meet could be such fun … Michael was heaven in his gray topper + Lee + I had blown all in a French hat shop so we were all right too … then all on to Ascot - I was with Hugh Fraser who Jack wanted to be an usher - a heavenly sail - + after every race you rush out to have a drink with everyone under the umbrellas - then you tear to the paddock + the bookies -"

But all was not perfect in paradise, with early signs of Jack's infidelities, and Jackie's acceptance of them. Her stay had been long enough that she was surprised that Jack had been in the hospital, "…  I talked to him on the phone - I didn't know he was in the hospital - poor Jack," followed by her comment  " … I wired him I would come home - but he said no - he's still planning to come over himself - I'm sure he won't - but anyway there's no point in my going back to DC for the end of the session if he's working all the time - "

Although it would be years later that John Kennedy's affairs publicly surfaced, Jacqueline Kennedy reportedly had a mutual understanding with her husband when it came to his dalliances with other women. In a cover story on People magazine, sources report that Jackie was aware of her complex marriage and was raised to believe that spouses cheating was just something that was done.

An incredible inside look at the thoughts of this future first lady. Only 5 years after this letter was written, the two would be hitting the campaign trial and their worlds would change forever.
