Description:

Isaac Toucey Two Naval Documents Signed as Secretary of the Navy

An ALS and a Ship Assignment signed by Secretary of the Navy, Isaac Toucey. Both are signed "Isaac Toucey". Both the letter and document have flattened mail folds, light toning, foxing, and soiling. Both boldly signed by Toucey.

The first is a ship assignment, 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, D.C., dated November 1, 1858. Addressed to Lt. James C. Williamson, directing him to proceed to Washington, D.C., and report to Commander Breese for duty on board the U.S. Receiving Ship "North Carolina". Countersigned by Commandant Samuel L. Breese and J. Ward.

The second is an autograph letter signed by Toucey, 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.5" x 9.5", Washington, D.C., dated January 6, 1860. Addressed to Lt. H.C. Blake, replying to his letter in which he complained that a portion of his pay was withheld by Captain Ward. Toucey supports Blake, stating that he is entitled to full pay as there were no provisions made to the contrary, such as a court martial.

Isaac Toucey (1792-1869) was a Connecticut lawyer who became a U.S. senator, Secretary of the Navy, U.S. Attorney General, and the 33rd Governor of Connecticut. He was appointed as Attorney General of the United States in 1848 by President Polk and held the position for just one year. He was then elected to the Senate in 1851 and often served as a point man for Franklin Pierce and his administration. Toucey was appointed as Secretary of the Navy by James Buchanan in 1857 and held this position until 1861 when Abraham Lincoln took office. He was then replaced by one of his rivals, Gideon Welles.
