Brooklyn, NY, May 24th, 1883
Invitation to the Opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, 1883, Made by Tiffany & Co.
Document

Exceptionally rare and beautifully preserved original invitation to the opening ceremonies of the Brooklyn Bridge, dated Thursday, May 24th, 1883. Elegantly engraved by Tiffany & Co., this historic piece is printed on cream-colored cardstock with fine calligraphic script and detailed imagery, including an etched vignette of the completed bridge spanning the East River between New York and Brooklyn. The invitation reads in part: "The Trustees of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge request the honor of your presence at the Opening Ceremonies to take place on Thursday, May 24th, 1883, at two o'clock P.M." It includes the names of prominent dignitaries and committee members, such as William C. Kingsley (Chairman of the Committee of Trustees) and Seth Low (Mayor of Brooklyn), and features ornate design elements including the official seals of both cities and a finely detailed image of the bridge. Mounting remnants, slight toning, not noticeable, else fine. Measures 9.125" x 6.25".

The opening of the Brooklyn Bridge was a monumental moment in American engineering and urban history. At the time of its completion in 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world and stood as a triumphant symbol of industrial progress. Designed by John A. Roebling and completed by his son Washington Roebling, the bridge linked the cities of New York and Brooklyn for the first time, transforming commerce and daily life in the region.

The event drew thousands, including President Chester A. Arthur and New York Governor Grover Cleveland. Invitations such as this were sent to political figures, dignitaries, and contributors to the bridge's construction. That this example was engraved by Tiffany & Co. further reflects the prestige and ceremonial importance of the occasion.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
