Important Order regarding Demobilization of the Army in 1865

[CIVIL WAR]. Printed Document, General Orders No. 122, July 8, 1865.  1 p., 5" x 7.25"

“All commissioned officers of Volunteers, for both white and colored regiments, or independent companies, now absent on detached service from their commands, and not on duty within their proper Armies or Departments, will proceed, forthwith, to join their respective regiments and companies.”

“All enlisted men absent on detached service from their regiments or companies and outside the Armies or Departments in which the same may be serving, will at once be sent to join their respective commands, unless they are absent therefrom by orders from the Headquarters of a Military Division or superior authority.”

On July 8, 1865, Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton issued this order regarding officers and men who were absent from their regiments. This order called on all to return to their regiments, with a few specified exceptions, at the penalty of losing their pay.

With the surrender of General Kirby Smith’s Trans-Mississippi Confederate army in May and of Cherokee Chief Stand Watie’s command in June, the war was finally over. Officers and sometimes enlisted men took approved and unapproved absences from their regiments. The rapid demobilization of the Union army in the summer and fall of 1865 required a massive amount of paperwork. Authorities knew from the experience of past wars that future pensions or land grants to veterans depended on the accuracy of muster rolls and especially mustering out forms.
