Bronze Grand Army Veteran Badge struck from captured Confederate Cannons

Original bronze Grand Army Badge, a five-pointed star measuring 1.75” between opposite points, suspended from a 13-star (not in a circle) American Flag ribbon attached to a silver eagle bar. Left and right white edges of ribbon are tattered. Fine condition.

The badge is made from Confederate cannons captured in battle during the Civil War. The five-pointed star design is similar in design to the Congressional Medals of Honor given to soldiers and sailors for meritorious and gallant conduct during the Civil War. The bronze was issued to the Grand Army of the Republic by the War Department as needed. The badges were supplied by the National Quartermaster to the individual Posts and were presented to members in good standing who had proved their honorable service in the Union forces in the Civil War.

The goddess of liberty, representing loyalty, is in the center of the badge. On either side is a soldier and a sailor clasping hands, representing fraternity, and two children receiving benediction and assurance of protection from the comrades, representing charity. On each side of the group is the American Flag and the Eagle, representing freedom; and the axe and bundle of rods, representing Union. In each point of the star is the insignia of the various branches of servicer: bugle for infantry, crossed cannons for artillery, crossed muskets for marines, crossed sabers for cavalry, and anchor for the sailors. Over the central groups are the words “Grand Army of the Republic” and under “1861 – Veteran – 1866” commemorating the commencement and close of the Civil War and also the date of the organization of the Order.

On the reverse is the National Shield is in the center, surrounded by the 24 recognized Corps Badges, numerically arranged, each on a keystone and all linked together, showing they are united and will guard and protect the shield of the nation. Around the center is a circle of stars representing the states of the union comprising the Grand Army of the Republic. The bar clasp is comprised of the figure of a silver eagle.
