John F. Kennedy
[Hyannis Port, MA], ca. 1959
Huge "Kennedy on Hyannis Dunes", His Purported Favorite Photo of Himself! Gelatin Silver Print by Mark Shaw
Photograph

An oversized, gelatin silver print depicting John F. Kennedy walking on the dunes of Hyannis Port. 1p, measuring 12.5" x 18.75", [Hyannis Port], ca. 1959. This image, said to be Kennedy's favorite photo of himself, shows him holding a jacket and looking to the right while on a sandy path flanked by tall grass. Flush mounted on stiff board, with the photographer's copyright and credit stamp on the verso. Exhibits light edge wear throughout, with isolated puckering near lower right. Residue present above Kennedy's figure, resulting in negligible image loss. Scattered handling marks and spot staining on verso, otherwise very good.

Mark Shaw (1921-1969) was a notable fashion and celebrity photographer of the 1950s and 60s. In 1959, Shaw was chosen by Life Magazine to photograph Jacqueline Kennedy while her husband, then-Senator John F. Kennedy, was running for president. This assignment was the beginning of an enduring working relationship and personal friendship with the family that would eventually lead to his acceptance as the Kennedy's de facto "family photographer". He subsequently visited them in both Hyannis Port and the White House, portraying the couple and their children in an array of official and casual settings. In 1964, many of these images were published in the book 'The John F. Kennedys: A Family Album', which became a bestseller.
