Herbert Hoover Signed Rio De Janeiro Photogravure From Goodwill Trip To Latin America
SP
Photogravure, ca 1928, by Elbe, Rio de Janeiro, with their embossed credit in the image at the lower left corner, featuring waves crashing along the coast during President-elect and Mrs. Hoover's 1928 trip to Latin America with sequence number 93 in the negative at the lower right image. Inscribed "A Merry Christmas" and signed by Herbert Hoover and Lou Henry Hoover in the lower border. We believe these were presented by the President and First Lady as a Christmas gift to White House staff in 1930. Light toning and soiling. The photogravure measures 11" x 9."

Shortly after Herbert Hoover won the Presidency in November 1928, he planned a groundbreaking trip to Latin America, becoming the first President-elect to do so. Hoover, drawing from his experience as Secretary of Commerce, recognized the economic importance of Latin America and sought to improve North American attitudes towards its hemispheric neighbors. His express purpose was to strengthen the relationship between the "Good Neighbors" by personally visiting and symbolizing mutual respect and understanding. During his six-week trip, Hoover delivered speeches in Honduras, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, emphasizing friendship and goodwill, which resonated well with Latin American leaders and people.

Hoover's trip marked a significant shift from the United States' earlier interventionist policies in Latin America. His willingness to undo the damage caused by previous administrations' paternalistic approaches was a refreshing change and heralded a new era in American relations. However, Hoover's personal motives were less grand. In a letter to Elihu Root, he expressed his desire to stay away from Washington and avoid the political pressures of patronage seekers and press attention. While the trip helped him escape political patronage demands, it did little to quiet the media's interest.
