Hattie McDaniel
n.p., ca. 1950
Hattie McDaniel "Gone With the Wind"-Era Publicity Photo Signed "Aunt Hattie"
SP
An autographed studio publicity photograph of important American actress Hattie McDaniel (1893-1952), signed, inscribed, and dated by her as: "'Love To' / 'Elsie / 'Success' / and / Best Wishes / Always / 'Aunt / Hattie' / 1950" in the upper left corner. The black and white portrait photograph, ca. 1939, shows McDaniel wearing a button-front modern black suit and a striking lapel watch. Expected wear to the photo surface including minor wrinkles. Isolated negligible ink smearing and smudging mentioned just for accuracy. Matted and shrink-wrapped, with a small area of shrink-wrap loss at lower left. Included verso is a Letter of Authenticity from an unknown auction house issued for this item as Lot 82 in November 2013. The sight size of the signed photograph is 7.25" x 9.125" while the overall mat size is 11" x 14" x .375."

McDaniel's inscription refers to herself as "Aunt Hattie." McDaniel played no fewer than four Aunt characters over the course of her 17-year-long film career, including Aunt Fatima (1932), Aunt Dilsey (1934), Aunt Carrie (1940), and Aunt Tempy (1946), but never Aunt Hattie. This appellation was probably an allusion to her frequently portraying loving materteral or motherly characters. Her most famous role, as Mammy in "Gone With the Wind," earned her the 1939 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. McDaniel was the first African American to win an Oscar and the first African American woman to sing on American radio.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
