In part:

"…I am pleased that you should have become interested in my recent book of collected essays. Many of them, as you may have noticed, were written long ago and I do not know that I can wholly subscribe to what may then have been said. I find that as I grow older I have no fixed ideas about anything, much less about the position of the doctor, aside from the fact that I feel more strongly than I used to feel that we need more good general practitioners and fewer men who have had just enough smattering of medical science during their education to make them half-baked investigators…concerning the matter of fees vs. salary…Some men are stimulated by the necessity of having to earn their own living and some men are rendered inactive by being on a salary. One can talk all round this principle until Doomsday without getting anywhere. It depends in my estimation wholly upon the circumstances of the case and the personality of the individual concerned…"

Harvey William Cushing (1869-1939) was an American neurosurgeon, pathologist, writer, and pioneer of brain surgery, commonly known as the "Father of American Neurosurgery". Regarded as the leading neurosurgeon of the 20th century, Cushing's name is known to every medical student and is associated with his most famous discovery, Cushing's disease. Cushing also left a lasting legacy in pathology with his work on the pituitary gland and brain tumors. Cushing was a prolific writer, producing several books and monographs, and some 300 publications, in addition to his Pulitzer Prize–winning biography of physician William Osler.
