Description:

H.S. Truman & H.L. Ickes Signed "Florida Centennial" Series Commemorative Stamp Block

A commemorative stamp block of fifty U.S. postage stamps celebrating 100 years of Florida statehood, signed by 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), as "Harry S Truman," and by Harold L. Ickes (1874-1952), as "Harold L. Ickes / Secretary of the Interior." Truman's and Ickes's signatures appear on the right edge of the stamp block. N.d., but based on the March 3, 1945 issue date of these stamps, ca. 1945. The stamp block is marked with serial number 23239. Truman's pen snagged one of the perforated lines along the stamp block edge, resulting in an atypical signature "S." A few closed tears are found along other perforated lines. Else near fine. Trimmed to a completed size of 9" x 10" overall.

The 3-cent bright red violet "Florida Centennial" stamp was released in early March 1945 by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Florida having joined the Union. The stamp depicts Floridian landmarks in Tallahassee and Saint Augustine, as well as the state seal.

Harry S. Truman served as president from April 1945 to January 1953. Harold L. Ickes served as the 32nd U.S. Secretary of the Interior from March 1933 to February 1946.
