Description:

1892 Rutherford B. Hayes ALS, Wishing to Visit a Reform School

1p, measuring 5.375" x 8.375", Spiegel Grover, Fremont, Ohio, dated January 14, 1892. Addressed to George E. Howe and signed "Rutherford B. Hayes" just one year before his death. Hayes writes his thanks for Howe's good wishes and speaks of visiting the institution soon. Accompanied by an engraving of Hayes, measuring 7" x 9.5". The letter has flattened mail folds and a small tear at the right lower edge. Light soiling throughout. Boldly signed.

The letter reads in full: "Your letter and good wishes are fully reciprocated in this Old House. Be assured of the continued interest here in all that concerns you and Mrs. Howe. I trust I may some time visit your institution, which is, I know, the gem of that class of good work. My 'chicks' area ll well and doing well. No children could be a greater comfort to their parents & your friend of Auld Lang Syne. With all regard to Mrs. Howe & yourself."

Following his term as president, Hayes declined to seek reelection and returned with his family to Spiegel Grove. He was elected as commander-in-chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States in 1888, holding the title until his death in 1893. In retirement, Hayes became involved in numerous charities, focusing on education subsidies for all children, believing that education was the best path to social improvement and equality. He was also a strong advocate for better prison conditions; the two ideals are likely what led him to George Howe.

George E. Howe was acting commissioner of the Ohio Reform Farm, a school that opened in 1858 to educate and rehabilitate boys from the Cincinnati House of Refuge, the Ohio Penitentiary, and county jails. In 1878 he relocated to take charge of the State Reform School of Connecticut, located in Meriden.
