An exceptional dealers' lot of 20 pieces, featuring autograph cards, signature clips, free franked envelopes, letter extracts, and cartes de visites of major nineteenth-century American politicians including Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Charles F. Adams, Schuyler Colfax, Thomas Hart Benton, Cassius M. Clay, Edward D. Morgan, Theodore F. Randolph, William L. Dayton, and Edward Everett.

 

Henry Clay (1777-1852) - U.S. Congressman and Senator from Kentucky, U.S. Secretary of State

 

Letter extracts inscribed in the hand of Henry Clay at his home at Ashland, originally dated October 22, 1849 and September 23, 1851, signed by him as "H. Clay" at lower right. Hinged at top to a larger cream sheet. Expected light paper folds. Accompanied by a vintage carte de visite.

 

Daniel Webster (1782-1852) - U.S. Congressman and Senator from Massachusetts, U.S. Secretary of State

 

Webster's signature as "Danl. Webster" on a manila colored paper slip mounted to a larger cream fragment. Accompanied by a vintage J.O. Kane carte de visite.

 

Charles F. Adams, Sr. (1807-1886) - U.S. Congressman from Massachusetts, U.S. Envoy to the United Kingdom, son of John Quincy Adams and grandson of John Adams

 

Adams's signature as "C.F. Adams" on a cream colored paper slip. The "C" of "C.F." is affected by uneven toning. Minor mounting traces verso. Accompanied by a vintage Black & Batchelder carte de visite.

 

Schuyler Colfax (1823-1885) - U.S. Congressman from Indiana, U.S. Vice President

 

Colfax's signature and inscription as "Respy Yours, / Schuyler Colfax" on a calling card mounted on a slightly larger cream card. 3.75" x 2.25". Accompanied by a vintage carte de visite.

 

Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) - U.S. Congressman and Senator from Missouri, great-grand-uncle of the Depression-era artist of the same name

 

Benton's clipped signature as "Thomas H. Benton", accompanied by a vintage J. Gurney & Son carte de visite. A few vertical wrinkles affecting Benton's signature, else very good.

 

Cassius M. Clay (1810-1903), Kentucky Congressman, U.S. Minister to Russia, cousin of Henry Clay

 

Clay's clipped signature as "C.M. Clay". Accompanied by a vintage E. Anthony / Brady's National Portrait Gallery carte de visite.

 

Edwin Denison Morgan (1811-1883) - Governor of New York, U.S. Senator from New York

 

Morgan's signature as "E.D. Morgan" appearing in the postage section of a free franked envelope. Expected weathering. The "E" was damaged when the envelope was opened. Postmarked from Washington, D.C. Accompanied by a vintage carte de visite.

 

Theodore F. Randolph (1826-1883) - Governor of New Jersey, U.S. Senator from New Jersey

 

Randolph's signature as "Theo. F. Randolph / U.S.S." on a goldenrod yellow colored paper slip. Uneven edges. 3.25" x 1.5". Comes with a miniature envelope.

 

William L. Dayton (1807-1864) - U.S. Senator from New Jersey, U.S. Minister to France

 

Dayton's clipped signature and inscription as "Wm L. Dayton / Trenton - N.J." 3.75" x 2.625". Accompanied by a vintage E. Anthony / Brady's National Portrait Gallery carte de visite.

 

Edward Everett (1794-1865) - Governor of Massachusetts, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, U.S. Minister to United Kingdom, U.S. Secretary of State

 

Everett's signature as "E. Everett / M.C." appearing in the postage section of a folded address leaf, also inscribed in his hand as "Free". Bearing a stamped philatelic marking from Boston, Massachusetts and docketed July 1835 verso. Scattered foxing. Accompanied by two vintage cartes de visites, one with isolated stains.

We do our own in-house worldwide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers.
