Gideon Welles & David D. Porter Signed Civil War Dated Docs

Porter (1813-1891). With expected folds, some light toning and scattered stains, else near fine. Both pieces measure approximately 8" x 10".

The documents include:

The cream bifold paper is on "Navy Department" letterhead, and is partly printed and partly handwritten. Docketed and stamped verso. The inner pages are blank.

Secretary of the Navy Welles ordered a Pennsylvania doctor named William M. Reber (promoted to the rank of Assistant Surgeon just a few months earlier, in late September 1863) to report from the Naval Hospital at Norfolk, Virginia to Cairo, Illinois.

2. 1p document dated December 10, 1863 signed by David D. Porter as "David D Porter" at center recto. Partly printed and partly handwritten on cream paper with "U.S. Mississippi Squadron" letterhead. Docketed and signed by Acting Master Commanding of the U.S.S. Grampus Elijah Sells verso.

Rear Admiral Porter commanded that Assistant Surgeon Reber report to the U.S.S. Grampus docked at Cincinnati, Ohio. This vessel, a side-wheel steamer acquired by Porter in July 1863, was used as a receiving ship for the Mississippi Squadron.
