Description:

Cleveland Grover 1837 - 1908

Grover Cleveland signed Executive Mansion card.

Cream colored stock card with dark blue embossed "Executive Mansion, Washington" letterhead signed by 22nd and 24th U.S. President Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) as "Grover Cleveland", the signature complete with its distinctive down-turned tail of the Cleveland "d". In near fine condition. Corners reinforced with translucent tape do not affect signature. Card measures 4.5" x 2.75". This card dates from one of two Cleveland's two presidential terms.

Grover Cleveland is the only U.S. President to serve non-consecutive presidential terms, the first between 1885 and 1889, and the second between 1893-1897. A Democrat, Cleveland first became involved in politics in his early 30s, while serving as Sheriff of Erie County, New York, Mayor of Buffalo, and later Governor of New York. Cleveland won the presidential election of 1884. His first administration focused mainly on domestic issues, like meritocratic government promotions, the gold standard, and tariff reform. When he ran for reelection in 1888, Cleveland was defeated by Republican candidate Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901). In the four-year-period of Cleveland's return to civilian life, he worked for a New York City law firm and enjoyed vacationing in Cape Cod. The on-going currency debate kept Cleveland in the public eye during Harrison's presidency, and the Democratic champion was reelected in 1892. Cleveland's second administration was largely concerned with economic policy: recuperating from the Panic of 1893, stabilizing hard specie, attempting to reverse the McKinley Tariff, and subduing labor unrest.
