Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) was an American politician who served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States between 1885-1889 and 1893-1897, respectively. In the years before his presidency, he served as a mayor and governor in New York state, winning fame as an anti-corruption crusader. Cleveland is the only president in U.S. history to serve non-consecutive presidential terms.

Daniel S. Lamont (1851-1905) was a politician from New York who would join then-governor Cleveland's staff in 1883, staying on as his personal secretary well into his first term in office. After Cleveland regained the presidency in 1888, Lamont became secretary of war, advising the President in several crises including the 1894 Pullman strike and the 1895 border dispute between Great Britain and Venezuela.
