A lovely set which would present well framed together. The ALS is shown in full below:

"Nov 19, 1897

My Dear Mr. McCall,

Hon John Carlisle ex Secretary of the Treasury, thinking may such recall him. Will deliver this note. You know my relations to Mr. Carlisle so well than it is hardly necessary for me to (illegible) you how much I shall appreciate any courtesy or kindness extended to him.

Yours very Sincerely

Grover Cleveland"

Cleveland is the only president to date who served two nonconsecutive terms, and also the only Democratic president to win election during the period of Republican domination of the White House that stretched from Abraham Lincoln's (1809-65) election in 1860 to the end of William Howard Taft's (1857-1930) term in 1913.

John A. McCall was President of New York life insurance company, a highly prestigious post he ultimately held for 14 years. A series of scandals affecting life insurance companies the country over ultimately forced McCall's resignation from New York Life in January 1906, a month before his death. According to the NY Times he was "the last of the Presidents of the three great life insurance companies to resign his office as a result of the scandals." The other two were James W. Alexander, president of the Equitable Life Assurance Company and Richard A. McCurdy, president of the Mutual Life Insurance Company. All three men suffered physical breakdowns as a result.

A lovely scarce ALS in highly collectible condition.
